Six films · 1947–1978 · AT&T Archives

They filmed it as they built it.

The transistor, the first satellite call, the videophone nobody bought, the network in your pocket. Watch six of those films, then see how much of it you can actually answer.

Film 01 · Quiz1947

A sliver of germanium ends the vacuum tube.

Three Bell Labs physicists build a device with no moving parts that can amplify a signal. Nearly every piece of electronics you have ever touched descends from it.

Why it still mattersThe whole industry, licensed outAT&T let others build on it. That decision is a large part of why the semiconductor business exists at all.
Three questionsThe film answers two of themGuess first if you like — you get the reasoning either way, right or wrong.
Film 02 · Guess the number1962

A beach ball in orbit carries the first live TV across an ocean.

Bell Labs built Telstar and NASA launched it. On 23 July 1962 it relayed live television between the United States and Europe for the first time.

Not a fixed orbitTwenty-odd minutes at a timeTelstar swung in and out of view, so both sides of the Atlantic steered enormous horn antennas to catch it.
The first call from spaceKappel to JohnsonAT&T's chairman placed it to the Vice President. Nobody had done that before.
Film 03 · Poll1970

The videophone arrives fifty years early.

Picturephone went on sale commercially in Pittsburgh in 1970. It worked. Almost nobody bought it. You now make video calls for free, several times a week.

The network effect, learned the hard wayA phone is worth nothing aloneA videophone is only useful if the person you want to call has one too.
Two questionsThen and now, same instinctVote on why it failed, then admit whether you keep your own camera on.
Film 04 · Put it in order1969

Two researchers, a spare machine, and the system that ate the world.

Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie start UNIX at Bell Labs in 1969. Rewriting it in C makes it portable, and portable is what makes it everywhere.

Where it ended upIn your hand, right nowEvery phone, server and laptop you use sits downstream of this four-step sequence.
Cast of the 1982 filmThe people, on cameraRitchie, Thompson, Kernighan and McIlroy explaining it themselves.
Film 05 · Then and now1978

Chicago gets divided into cells.

Split a city into small coverage areas, reuse the same frequencies in each one, and hand the call off as the car keeps driving. The trial that proved it.

Before the trialA waiting list, for yearsOlder mobile service gave a whole city a handful of channels. Frequency reuse is what broke that ceiling.
Still the same ideaEvery G since is a refinementDivide the map, reuse the spectrum, hand the call along. That has not changed in forty-eight years.
Film 06 · Your turn1961

A film about the future, made before the future.

In 1961 the Bell System put its bet on digital transmission down on film. Mark what they got right — then say what the next hundred years should connect.

Scored on nerveThey committed, on cameraPredictions are cheap now. In 1961 this was the company telling the public where it was putting the money.
